Twelve Skill Wishes From Your Management for 2020

In 2019, DevOps Institute conducted the first Upskilling Enterprise DevOps skills and we published the report which some of you might have seen. In recent speeches and travels we have been asked what leaders have on their must-have skill list for the DevOps humans of the future.  For you in the holiday spirit, I decided to put together the 12 most must-have skills your management wishes a DevOps human should have based on the 2019 survey data. Here they are:

Have an equal balance of core (soft), process and functional skills. Within the core skills or sometimes (also called soft skills) you should possess the following must-have skills:

  1. Collaboration and Cooperation
  2. Problem Solving
  3. Interpersonal Skills
  4. Sharing and knowledge transfer
  5. Personal value commitment
  6. Flexibility and adaptability
  7. Leadership

In terms of process skills, you should have skills in:

  1. Agile
  2. System thinking
  3. Understanding of process flow and analysis

When looking at the functional skills you should possess:

  1. IT Operations, security and application development skills at equal levels. 
  2. Be in the know about infrastructure especially cloud and cloud ecosystems.
  3. Have familiarity with APIs and multiple programming languages.
  4. Familiarize yourself with knowledge around testing.   
  5. Update your frameworks mix and match understanding with fundamentals about DevOps, SRE and service management.
