How to Implement Value Stream Management

As with any emerging market, there are a lot of unknowns around adoption and people need guidance. In this presentation, Helen will outline the steps teams and organizations need to take to implement value stream management ways of working and platforms so that they can continually inspect and adapt the flow of value to their customers. No matter where you are in your DevOps journey, value stream centric thinking can be leveraged to accelerate and measure progress. Looking at the human aspects of culture, behavior and organizational design, how to streamline processes and how to align your CICD pipeline and DevOps toolchain with your value stream steps, Helen presents a model for adoption.

4 Maps of DevOps

Although DevOps practices deliver incredible benefits to organizations looking to improve their software delivery practices, the larger positive impact of DevOps to delivering value is often harder to realize. A set of practices we’ve found to help organizations is something we call the 4 Maps of DevOps.
Fitting nicely in between the 3 ways and 5 ideals, the 4 maps consist of Outcome Mapping, Value Stream Mapping, Dependency Mapping and Capability Mapping. They help you create a powerful roadmap that is outcomes-focused and targeted at the most important problems.
Through this talk, I’ll walk through the benefits these maps produce, how they relate to one another and the problems you can target with them. I’ll go through some real-life examples of using these maps to help organizations.
This talk is for anybody who is struggling to work out where to start or where to go next with their adoption of DevOps..

Peter Maddison has been in the business of building high-performance teams and automating everything worth automating for the past couple of decades. Presently, Peter spends his time helping organizations accelerate their delivery practices as an expert coach and consultant and is equally comfortable talking about business strategy as he is talking about IT. Lance Knight - President and COO | ConnectALL

Value trumps Flow when managing Value Streams

Over the past few years, there has been a renewed interest in value stream management in software delivery and development. This renewed interest is focused mostly on improving Flow. Companies are assuming that focusing on Flow is a way to improve business outcomes with their digital transformation initiatives. Still, as they become more efficient, they realize they’re not delivering any more value to their customers. The lean decision filter of Value Trumps Flow, Flow Trumps Waste Elimination, and Eliminate Waste to Improve Efficiency can help organizations decide what to improve and what impact the improvement of Flow and removing waste may have on business value. Join Lance Knight as he discusses the lean decision filter and how to apply it to improving both Value and Flow.

About Lance

Lance Knight is President and COO of ConnectALL LLC, a software value stream management company. His responsibilities include sales, sales operations, customer success, and technical support. Previously, he held SVP/VP roles at LeadingAgile, Tasktop Technologies, and Accept Software, specializing in field operations, sales development, and customer success. Lance started his IT career with a large aerospace manufacturer, where he learned about lean manufacturing and systems thinking. He is a published author of books and white papers on leadership, software development, and software sales.

Q

Donna Knapp - Curriculum Development Manager | ITSM Academy

Optimize and Automate

One of the challenges facing organizations is striking a balance between transforming how we work and standardizing work. In Lean, standardized work involves establishing the procedures needed to make products in the safest, easiest, and most effective way possible given current technologies. Sometimes those technologies enable us to completely transform the way work is done (e.g., automating software development and delivery methods via a CI/CD pipeline). Other times, optimizing processes and procedures can be achieved simply by leveraging existing tools and frameworks to optimize work and automate it where possible. One of ITIL 4’s guiding principles is ‘optimize and automate’. So how do we do that? This session describes when value stream mapping can be used to transform work, and when other continuous improvement methods aimed at optimizing processes and procedures will do the trick.

About Donna

Donna Knapp has more than 30 years of experience in the IT industry working as a practitioner, consultant, and educator. She is ITSM Academy’s Curriculum Development Manager. Donna is the author of The ITSM Process Design Guide, two college textbooks focused on the Service Desk, and was a contributing author to ITIL® 4: High-velocity IT. Donna was the lead developer for the DevOps Institute’s DevOps Foundation course and is also the author of courses such as ITSM for DevOps and Certified Agile Process Owner (CAPO). Donna recently teamed with Mike Orzen (co-author of Lean IT) to develop a Value Stream Mapping Fundamentals course. Donna’s years of practical experience and love of learning are reflected in her many certifications which include: Certified Process Design Engineer (CPDE), ITIL 4 Strategic Leader, ITIL 4 Managing Professional, Certified Scrum Master, DevOps Leader, DTE, DSOE, CDA, and Site Reliability Engineering Foundation.

Organizations and teams gain insights into their business value flow through value stream management. Lean thinking is a business methodology that aims to optimize the software development and delivery lifecycle. However, applying a lean mindset often brings challenges, as people are less likely to change how they work. Accelerating value flow: Moving beyond story points

Is your product team still evaluating efficiencies solely on story points and number of stories? Measuring story points is about as useful as measuring developer keystrokes (while interesting, not definitive on how much is going forward). The traditional focus of only story points distracts from getting to the ultimate goal of eliminating bottlenecks and accelerating value to customers. By looking at all of the flow metrics you can eliminate the choke points of delivering value to your customers.

Join us for this session to learn:
– Why care about value stream flow metrics?
– What are the value stream flow metrics?
– How do you calculate them?
– What to interpret them?
